An Ontario cottage resort vacation is perfect for families with children. Housekeeping cottage resorts offer families vacationing with children more flexibility than other types of resort accommodations. At an Ontario cottage resort, families can prepare their own meals, not only eliminating the expense of eating out, but allowing families, especially those with young children, the ability to cater to everyone's needs on their own schedule. Another advantage that lakefront housekeeping cottage resorts like Pine Vista have for family holidays is that there will be other families at the resort as well. This gives children, and their parents, the opportunity to make new friends. Just like at summer camp, sometimes the friends you make over the summer contribute greatly to the fond memories of vacationing in Ontario's cottage country.
An Ontario housekeeping cottage resort vacation also has advantages over a private cottage rental. Pine Vista Resort, a 4 star cottage resort property, offers a host of facilities and wide array of recreational activities and amenities that private cottage rentals simply can't provide. At Pine Vista, we have a fabulous children's summer program and extensive activities for teens and adults. We have a large heat pool, hot tub, outdoor and indoor children's play areas, a library, coin operated laundry, a fleet of boats, air hockey, volley ball, shuffleboard, ping pong, and the list goes on. No ordinary cottage rental could possibly offer what our Kawartha Lakes housekeeping cottage has for an enjoyable cottage vacation.
You can book your Ontario resort getaway at Pine Vista Resort with confidence, knowing that Pine Vista Resort is a Canada Select Property. Stoney Lake, also known as Stony Lake, is famous throughout Ontario as the "Jewel of the Kawarthas". Part of a two lake chain, Stoney Lake is referred to as Stony Lake on federal and provincial maps. Locally, the arm of the lake that extends to the east is known as Upper Stoney Lake. The central body of water that makes up the lake is known to its residents as Stony Lake. And, the arm stretching out to the south is known as Clear Lake. Over 20 miles long from Young's Point to the lake's eastern shores, Stoney Lake encompasses over 1,000 islands and rivals Muskoka Ontario for its classic 'cottage country' beauty. The lake is enjoyed by its seasonal and year-round residents, resort vacationers, fishermen and by boaters using the Trent-Severn Waterway. The Trent Severn Waterway system runs from Lake Ontario in the south all the way north to Georgian Bay. Here on Stoney Lake, you can observe many different types of boats, from small fishing boats to million dollar motor yachts passing through.
Pine Vista Resort and Stoney Lake are part of the Kawartha East region of the Trent Severn Waterway which covers the area from Lakefield up to Bobcaygeon. This section of the waterway includes Lock 26 at Lakefield, Lock 27 at Young's Point, and Lock 28 at Burleigh Falls. All of these locks are within a short drive of Pine Vista and are well-worth visiting. People gather at the locks to watch the constant parade of boat traffic maneuver through the locks or to have a picnic at one of the tables provided for visitors and tourist by Parks Canada. Each of the three Kawartha East locks is unique. Right beside Lock 27, at Young's Point, visitors will find the Lockside Trading Company Store. Located in a century home, the Lockside Trading Co. is a gift, furniture and collectable shop with an amazing assortment of interesting items for sale. At Lock 28, Burleigh Falls is very scenic, due in large part to the falls, and draws photographers and fishermen alike.

Ontario resorts are a perfect vacation choice. When you come to Pine Vista Resort once, you will love it forever. Our Stoney Lake resort has been welcoming guests for more than half a century. For three generations, we have hosted families on vacation, romantic couples and groups at this family-friendly cottage resort in the Kawarthas. We are proud of our reputation as a first class Ontario resort, well known for our gracious, attentive service, quality cottages that are immaculately clean and generously equipped… and for our enviable location on one of Ontario's best loved and most scenic lakes. Stoney Lake is considered one of Ontario's most prestigious and desirable lakes. It most certainly is one of the most scenic. With Stoney Lake's rugged, meandering shoreline and more than 1,100 charted islands, guests at our Kawartha Lakes resort could spend many enjoyable hours explore its waters. We invite our guests to take advantage of our complimentary kayaks, canoes and paddleboats in order to take in the beauty of the area by water. For those who wish to travel the entire lake more quickly and see all the sights that Stoney Lake is famous for, Pine Vista also has motor boats for rent.
Protecting the environment and preserving the natural beauty of the Pine Vista Resort property and of Stoney Lake is extremely important to us. We are an eco-friendly Ontario resort that employs environmentally responsible practices wherever we can in the day to day operations of our resort. For example, to conserve energy, we have installed compact fluorescent bulbs. To reduce our water usage, we have installed in all of our cottages water-efficient showerheads and low-flush toilets. We have also added delay sensors to many of our air-conditioner units. We are very proud of the success of our shoreline restoration project, initiated to help sustain our lake's eco-system by re-introducing many native plants and species. Naturally, our Kawartha resort practices recycling and we encourage our resort guests to recycle as well.
A recent addition at Pine Vista Resort that we are certain our guests will appreciate is our nature boardwalk. We built the nature boardwalk so that guests may experience close up the many wonders of our pristine wetlands without harming the area's fragile eco-system. Built along the Pine Vista wet lands, guests can walk the boardwalk amongst the flora, fauna and wildlife that inhabits this special place in abundance, including birds of all sorts, beaver, turtles, frogs, snakes and much more. Guests may share their wetland experiences and sightings in a trailside log book and read about the sightings of others.
The best part about renting an Ontario waterfront cottage is being close to the lake. During the warm summer months, you can indulge in all of your favorite water based activities, right at your door step. At Pine Vista Resort, our cottages are located by the shores of Stoney Lake, one of the best loved and most scenic lakes in Ontario. While on your Kawartha Lakes vacation at Pine Vista, be sure to take some time to explore Stoney Lake. There are many places of interest and unique sights to see, such as St Peter's on the Rocks, Quarry Bay Beach, Eel's Creek, Young's Point and Lock #27 and Burleigh Falls and Lock #28.
Stoney Lake, or Stony Lake as it is sometimes called, has thousands of islands and rocky shoals. Juniper Island and Horseshoe Island are two of Stoney Lake's largest islands. Other well known islands on Stoney Lake are Big Island, Doe Island and Rankin's Rock. Fairy Lake Island is a Stoney Lake island that fully encircles a small lake. Its tiny island lake is surrounded by private property and is not accessible by boat. Stoney Lake was once known as Salmon Trout Lake by the early settlers. Today, salmon trout are no longer found here, although many other species of fish thrive.
Stoney Lake has a rich history, dating back many years. Some historians claim that Samuel de Champlain himself paddled Stoney Lake during one of his expeditions in the new world. Many centuries before that, Canada's native peoples enjoyed the fresh water and bountiful wildlife of the area. European settlers began to arrive in the 18th century as the lumber industry took hold. Lumber mills and small settlements began to spring up, and later train service, steam boats and new roadways brought entrepreneurs, farmers and eventually tourists. As the lumber industry waned, tourism began to take hold. The early tourist homes and bordering houses gave way to larger and more luxurious accommodations on Stoney Lake, as people from Toronto and the northern states heard about the beauty of the area and the great fishing to be had. The first tourists came to the Kawartha Lakes area to fish and hunt. They travelled north by train and arrived at their Stoney Lake destination usually by boat. Once here, they either camped or stayed at the first Stoney Lake lodges which were very rustic at best. Cottages on Stoney Lake began to spring up after the 1883 meeting of the American Canoe Association on Juniper Island where people from southern Ontario and the northern states bought Stoney Lake land from the Crown to build vacation homes. With this new seasonal population and the resulting building boom created by the sudden influx of cottagers, new jobs were created for the local residents of Mount Julian, Young's Point, McCracken's Landing, especially in construction, and in supplying goods and services to the new cottagers. To promote social activities around the lake and to better help protect the lake and their investment in Stoney, many Stoney Lake cottage owners gradually formed a number of cottage associations around the lake. Formed over 100 years ago, one of the oldest is the Association of Stony Lake Cottagers on Juniper Island. Other thriving Stoney lake cottage owner associations include, the Upper Stoney Lake Cottagers' Association, Kawartha Park Cottagers Association, Birchcliff Property Owners' Association of Douro-Dummer and the Sandy Point Cottagers, Association.
Not only is Stoney Lake famous for its natural beauty and for the many lovely cottages, both old and new, that line its shores, but Stoney is also well-known in film. Several Hollywood movies and Toronto film productions have been shot on Stoney Lake. In 2003, the film The In-Laws, starring Michael Douglas, Albert Brooks and Ryan Reynolds was filmed at several spots on the lake. The 2005 comedy Cheaper by the Dozen, starring Steven Martin, Bonnie Hunt and Hilary Duff was also filmed on Stoney Lake near Burleigh Falls. In the 1980's, the soap opera All My Children followed a story line that involved characters being kidnapped and taken to the wilds of Canada, and it was all filmed here on Stoney. Most recently, the Food Network's Restaurant Makeover TV show filmed an episode at a popular Stoney Lake restaurant.
